Calgary, Alberta
Norman Burnham White is a Calgary based artist working primarily in acrylic on canvas. His work features a single, boldly presented subject. He is influenced by early 20th century immigration, settlement and railway posters by AC Leighton and others. His earlier work incorporated words in the surface of the painting; the newer work centres around infrastructure and industrial themes. Norman’s work can be found in several corporate and institutional collections, including the City of Calgary, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Grant MacEwan University, Mount Royal University, and University of Alberta Hospitals.
Q+A
How long have you been creating art?
Since the 1970s!
Which piece of art you've created is your favourite, and why?
“Mile 99,” among the more recent paintings. It’s an iconic Canadian image: the CPR in the Rockies, in front of Castle Mountain. The colours show you can do more with paint than with photography.
What do you listen to when you work?
I have quite an extensive playlist. David Bowie, Joe Jackson, Glenn Gould, Billy Bragg, David Byrne, Stan Ridgway, and a host of others..
When I'm not making art, I'm (a) ...
Highway coach driver
Coffees per day and from where
Two or three, usually at home. I actually like both Tim’s and Starbucks.
